THE communications director of the largest cocoa co-operative in Ghana has spoken to hundreds of children at a Plymouth secondary school.

Erica Kyere, of Kuapa Kokoo, promoted Fairtrade products and their importance to pupils of Lipson Community College.

The school is a co-operative trust school – and is a “firm supporter” of Fairtrade.

It has just backed the annual Fairtrade Fortnight, with pupils and staff involved in activities such as baking Fairtrade cookies.

Lynda Mctier, assistant principal, said: “A highlight of their fortnight was a visit from Erica Kyere. Her visit was organised by the Plymouth Ghana link.

“Erica was promoting Fairtrade and the work of the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative.

“The co-operative has 45,000 farmer members in more than 1,300 villages and communities.

“Students listened to a presentation from Erica and had the opportunity to ask her questions about the co-operative values that Kuapa Kokoo promotes and what they can do to support Fairtrade in the UK.”

Susan Kilvington, head of citizenship at Lipson, said: “This was an amazing opportunity for our students to engage with someone who is active in the world of co-operatives.

“The work of this woman and the women of Kuapa Kokoo is truly inspirational.”
