As is customary in Ghana, Lord Mayor Mary Aspinall was presented with a ceremonial parasol measuring a staggering 4m in diameter.
Chieftains in Ghana traditionally arrive at official occasions wearing gold-gilded robes and accompanied by a ceremonial umbrella.
The red and gold parasol will be used at both local and international events to alert people to the presence of the Plymouth Ghana Link.
The Plymouth Ghana Link started in 2003 and is run by a committee of dedicated volunteers. As well as cementing links between Plymouth and Ghana through school exchanges and health projects, a group of hernia surgeons travel annually to Ghana as part of the link.
Peter Reid, secretary of the Link, said: “The parasol is a celebration of the colourful and joyous Ghanaian culture and we will be using it at a great many ceremonies to mark the presence of the Ghana Link and the work that we do.”
