Over twenty schools in Plymouth – primary, secondary and special – have links with schools in Ghana. These links allow pupils in both countries to learn more about each other, to exchange ideas and to make new friendships.
Many schools have benefited from British Council awards that have enabled teachers to visit Ghana, and for teachers from Ghana to spend time in Plymouth schools.
There have been many tangible benefits from this activity including the development of curriculum resources and cross-cultural understanding. For many students who have had the opportunity to travel this has been a life changing opportunity that has shaped and challenged plans for future careers.
Teachers working in schools in Sekondi-Takoradi have gained insights into curriculum planning and school development processes in ways that they can challenge their own practices back in Ghana. In one school in Sekondi-Takoradi, a benefit from the link has been the establishing of a computer network linked to broadband enabling pupils to communicate, more easily and regularly with pupils in their link school in Plymouth.
